Perryville's girls won a three-team track and field meet at Elkton Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers (78) prevailed over Rising Sun (64), and the host Elks (40). Brooke Doane triumphed in the long jump and triple jump and teamed with Katelyn Broughman, Alyssa Conway, and Autumn Estep to take the 4 x 200 relay. Estep won the 100 hurdles. Rising Sun's track and field opened the season with a meet in North East Tuesday, March 22.
BOYS
The Perryville boys track and field team has a good mix of talented veterans and promising newcomers. Travon Morgan, an integral part of the Panther program in recent years, has assumed even more responsibilities with departure of longtime coach Jake Moore. He relishes the challenge. BOYS
Coach Jim Burkhardt is expecting success from both of his track and field teams. The boys team is a bit more well rounded. Perryville sophomore Cage Jones captured the boys pole vault title at the MPSSAA Class 1A/2A indoor track and field meet Monday, February 22, at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.
Jones won with a height of 11 feet. "Since I'm only a 10th grader, it's an awesome feeling to win a state title," Jones said. "Coach Weiss (Raissa Moore) moved me to a longer pole so that I could vault higher. My confidence increased. I knew I had a shot at winning the title, especially when I didn't hit a single bar until after I had won. My next goal is to get to 12 feet and higher." The Perryville girls indoor track and field team captured its fifth straight 1A East Region title Monday, February 1, at PG Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.
Jake Moore, who guided the Perryville High track and field and cross country programs from relative obscurity to state supremacy, has stepped down from his teaching and coaching responsibilities to accept an administration position in Chester County, Pa.
Moore will be an assistant principal at Kennett Middle School in Landenberg, part of the Kennett Consolidated School District. He got a contingency offer several days ago but his Pennsylvania certification had not been processed. The official offer came yesterday at 4 p.m. and he accepted immediately. Moore informed the Perryville team this morning following the first cross country practice of the season. Sierra Montz of Perryville successfully defended her title in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the Panthers' 4 x 400 relay team won gold for the second straight year at the MPSSAA track and field meet which concluded Saturday at Morgan State University.
The Perryville girls finished third in the team competition and were a couple of miscues away from winning their first-ever team title. Bohemia Manor captured two state championships and the Perryville girls are in position to contend for the team title following the first day of the state track and field meet Thursday at Morgan State University.
Perryville's track program brought more hardware home from Kent Island Saturday.
The Panther boys captured the 1A east region title for the fifth straight season while the girls triumphed for the fourth consecutive year. |
